Description
The EXL165-5 takes D’Addario’s popular EXL165 hybrid formula and extends it to five strings. Rather than using a single gauge progression, this set pairs the brighter, lower-tension high strings from the EXL170 series with the punchier low strings pulled from the EXL160 line. The result is a bass set that feels comfortable under the fingers while still delivering clear fundamentals and a tight, defined low end — a combination many players find hard to get from a standard single-series set.
- Hybrid construction: EXL170-style highs (.045, .065) paired with EXL160-style lows (.085, .105)
- Added .135 Low B string rounds out the 5-string set with booming, controlled bottom
- Round wound with nickel-plated steel wrap wire for a bright, versatile tone across genres
- Wound on D’Addario’s digitally controlled machinery for precise intonation and consistent output string to string, set to set
- Built for long scale basses, accommodating a string scale length up to 36 1/4 inches
- Manufactured in the U.S.A.
Whether you’re locking in low-end grooves or picking out melodic lines on the high strings, the EXL165-5 gives 5-string players the tension feel and tonal clarity that made the original EXL165 a favorite among 4-string bassists — now extended for the low B crowd. Nickel-plated wrap wire keeps the tone bright without sacrificing warmth, making these strings equally at home in rock, funk, jazz, or studio work.
